Japan COVID-19 Death Toll On Rise Again

BF.7 variant pandemic wave is expected to be the biggest one yet for Japan as death rate by the new variant continues to rise.

Tokyo, 28 December 2022 (GNP): After the end of COVID-19’s Omicron pandemic wave, the new BF.7 variant has affected every country, with Japan experiencing 415 deaths today from COVID-19.

Despite the new BA.7 variant, BA.5 COVID variant has remained dominant since the first case in November 2021. Newer variants have had a lesser impact in Japan as compared to BA.5, as it has made up over 90% of all cases in the capital.

“There’s a possibility that the current surge will lead to a wave that matches or exceeds the seventh wave that we experienced in the summer. Hokkaido’s daily figure is already at a level above past records.”- Takaji Wakita, a member of the Hokkaido Prefecture advisory board, stated.

He further added: “During the seventh wave, the virus spread widely, especially in western Japan, while the wave wasn’t as high in eastern Japan, that has affected infection trends this time.”

COVID-19’s first case was reported in Wuhan, China, back in December 2019. The disease quickly spread worldwide, resulting in the COVID-19 pandemic with recorded 6,679,966 deaths.
