Tokyo, 28 December 2022 (GNP): After the end of COVID-19’s Omicron pandemic wave, the new BF.7 variant has affected every country, with Japan experiencing 415 deaths today from COVID-19.
Despite the new BA.7 variant, BA.5 COVID variant has remained dominant since the first case in November 2021. Newer variants have had a lesser impact in Japan as compared to BA.5, as it has made up over 90% of all cases in the capital.
“There’s a possibility that the current surge will lead to a wave that matches or exceeds the seventh wave that we experienced in the summer. Hokkaido’s daily figure is already at a level above past records.”- Takaji Wakita, a member of the Hokkaido Prefecture advisory board, stated.

He further added: “During the seventh wave, the virus spread widely, especially in western Japan, while the wave wasn’t as high in eastern Japan, that has affected infection trends this time.”
