Islamabad High Court extends Imran Khan’s bail

Islamabad, 17 May 2023 (GNP): The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday extended its order barring authorities from arresting former prime minister and PTI Chairman Imran Khan in multiple cases — including those that are undisclosed — registered across the country until 31st May.

Additional attorney general of Pakistan and the advocate general of Pakistan sought time from court  to provide further details regarding cases against the PTI chief. Imran Khan’s lawyer, Barrister Gohar, was also present at the court.

The court accepted the request of the attorney general and advocate general, and adjourned the hearing until 31st May.

Earlier, PTI chief referred to the IHC and asked for exemption from appearance in interim bail case. In a written plea by Imran Khan concerns were raised regarding the potential for a law and order crisis if Imran Khan were to participate in the hearing, given the ongoing protests staged by the PDM parties outside the Supreme Court.

Imran Khan was arrested by National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in the Al-Qadir Trust case on May 9. The PTI chief was taken into custody by Rangers personnel, who were acting on the NAB’s warrant, from the premises of Islamabad High Court where the former premier had gone to seek bail in multiple cases registered against him.

The IHC later termed the arrest of the former premier and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman ‘legal’ and issued contempt of court notices to Interior Secretary and IG Islamabad. The Supreme Court, however, declared Imran Khan’s arrest ‘invalid and unlawful’ on May 10.

The arrest of Imran Khan triggered violent protests in the country, resulting in deaths, injuries and damage to public and private property.
