Iran’s last ambassador to the UAE, Mohammad Reza Fayaz, left the country and returned in 2016. Since that time, Iran’s chargé d’affaires in the UAE has been Hossein Heidari.

The UAE scaled down the level of its diplomatic presence after Saudi Arabia and its neighbor suspended ties in 2016 due to protestors looting its diplomatic missions in Iran after it executed a prominent Shiite cleric.

However, Long-standing business links between Iran and the UAE persisted despite the diplomatic hiatus.

In an agreement to fix the ties mediated by Beijing, Riyadh resumed diplomatic relations with Tehran last month.
