Representatives from the Council decide on a single subject for the entire four-year interval that occurs between these anniversary years.

The Council chose the following theme for the 2019 celebrations of ICAO’s 75th anniversary: “75 Years of Connecting the World.”

The Council has agreed that the topic shall be “Advancing Innovation for Global Aviation Development” from this point forward until 2023.

Civil Aviation

Civil Aviation refers to all non-military flying. It encompasses both commercial and private aviation activity. Civil Aviation aided State social and economic advancements.

The United Nations (UN) acknowledges that international travel is crucial to maintaining world peace and prosperity.

History of the Day

The ICAO, a specialized agency of the UN, designated December 7 as the day to honor the global contributions made by civil aviation.

54 countries ratified the Chicago Convention, commonly known as the Convention on International Civil Aviation in 1944. The convention ratifies the safety, registration, and airspace regulations.

The Day was founded in 1994 as part of the ICAO’s 50th-anniversary celebrations. The idea was that as civil aviation continues to advance, it will enable people and nations to come together and form friendly relations.

Following that, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) advised states to take the necessary actions to recognize this day.

ICAO organizes activities and events, including seminars, educational sessions, and press releases about civil aviation-related subjects on this day.
