Imran suspends ‘Jail Bharo Tehreek’ after SC verdict

He said the party is suspending its Jail Bharo movement and moving forward with election campaigns in KP and Punjab.

Islamabad, 1 March 2023 (GNP): Imran Khan, the PTI chairman, praised the Supreme Court’s decision. Also, he declared that his party would start campaigning activities in the two provinces after stopping a “fill the jails” protest movement that demanded early elections. The PTI Chairman tweeted

”It was the responsibility of the Supreme Court to uphold the constitution and they have valiantly done that through their judgment today. It is an assertion of a rule of law in Pakistan,” he wrote on Twitter.

He urged party members to arrange corner meetings and rallies in each district where Imran will address to the people.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan today, has declared that elections for provincial assemblies in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa must be conducted within 90 days.

 

Elections in Punjab, KP to be held in 90 days, rules SC in 3-2 verdict 

 

On Wednesday, the five-member panel of the Supreme Court presided by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial, issued a split 3-2 ruling.

One of the key elements of the constitution is the parliamentary system of government. Without the parliament or the provincial assemblies, there cannot be a parliamentary democracy. Elections and the regular conduct of elections support the constitution’s basis, and the court ruled in its order.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, was in charge of the two provinces’ assembly. Khan requested the dissolution of the two assemblies from the provincial governors in January to force early elections.

Imran declared later in the day that the party’s election campaign would start on Saturday night. He stated that the party was stopping its “Jail Bharo movement” and focusing on its election campaigns in Punjab and KP.
