Highway collapse kills 19 people in Southern China

Guangdong, 1 May, 2024(GNP): Nineteen people have died after a highway crumbled in China’s Guangdong province on Wednesday.

A section of the express highway connecting Meizhou City and Dapu City in Guangdong Province crumbled at around 2:10 a.m. on Wednesday, leaving eighteen cars stuck.

Widely transmitted social media videos shot in darkness showed a blazing fire beneath where the road incident took place.

Rescue teams started rescue operations at the scene. Images taken after the next day of incident showed cars piled high at the bottom of a defile.

Reportedly, 30 people were getting medical treatment in hospitals, and they were “without immediate risk”.

The Guangdong provincial government had conveyed a rescue force of approximately 500 people, the state broadcaster said.

Rescue efforts were still in progress, according to the update from the local police department. Southern China was hit with torrential rain in recent weeks.

Guangdong province, an economic powerhouse home to 127 million people, has seen pervasive flooding, which has forced more than 110,000 people to move, state media reported, citing the local government.

At least four people have died in flood in Guangdong, including a rescue team member, state news agency Xinhua reported on Monday. At least 10 people remain missing, it added.
