Google lays off 12,000 employees

As an economic downturn approaches the US economy, companies have been reducing the size of their labour force.

New York, 21 January 2023 (GNP): Due to an economic downturn in the US, Alphabet, parent company of Google announced that it will be laying off 12,000 employees globally.

The announcement of employee redundancies comes a day after Microsoft, an American company owned by Bill Gates, said it would reduce workers by 10,000 in the upcoming months. Facebook, the owner of Meta, also announced cutting down the size of their workforce, while Amazon and Twitter also announced the same.

Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Alphabet, wrote in an email to employees: “Over the past two years, we’ve seen periods of dramatic growth. To match and fuel that growth, we hired for a different economic reality than the one we face today. We’ve undertaken a rigorous review across product areas and functions to ensure that our people and roles are aligned with our highest priorities as a company.”

He concluded his email, adding: “The roles we’re eliminating reflect the outcome of that review.”
