Foreign Minister Bilawal heads to India for SCO

Karachi, 4 May 2023 (GNP): The Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has traveled to Goa, India, to lead a Pakistani delegation at the Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on Thursday.

The Pakistan delegation has been invited by Dr. S Jaishankar, India’s Minister for External Affairs and the current chair of the SCO CFM, according to a statement from the Foreign Office (FO). 

Before departing for the neighboring country, the Foreign Minister shared a video on Twitter where he stated that his decision to attend the meeting demonstrates Pakistan’s unwavering dedication to the SCO charter.

He also expressed his anticipation for productive conversations with his counterparts from friendly nations.

The FO also stated that Pakistan’s attendance at the two-day meeting demonstrates its dedication to the SCO charter and processes, as well as its recognition of the region’s significance in its foreign policy objectives.

Despite attempts to improve relations between Pakistan and India, the two countries have not made any significant progress.

FM Bilawal’s visit to India can be viewed as an attempt to break the ice, although it is unlikely to result in any major changes in the bilateral relationship.

It is believed that Pakistan chose to attend the SCO meeting due to its significance, and some argued that Pakistan needed to participate in such crucial regional forums to avoid further isolation.
