EU Commissioner’s 2-day visit to Pakistan

Islamabad, 15 November 2022 (GNP/ TDI):  Ylva Johansson paid a two-day visit to Pakistan on 13 November 2022. She is European Union (EU) Commissioner for Home Affairs.

The agenda of the visit discussed Migration and Mobility dialogue and Security Cooperation between the EU and Pakistan.

A wide range of bilateral relationships with the government, law enforcement agencies, and UN organizations. EU Commissioner was welcomed by the EU Ambassador to Pakistan, Riina Kionka, and other delegates.

Day 1 of the visit

On Day 1, Commissioner Ylva Johansson visited Peshawar, close to the Afghan border, where she had discussions with the Frontier Corps and the Federal Investigation Agency on several topics (FIA) related to mutual interest.

Ylva Johansson received an update on the battle against organized crime, terrorism, and border management initiatives.

An unprecedented comprehensive debate on migration and mobility will now be started between the EU and Pakistan. This will include dealing with irregular migration and migrant smuggling.

Likewise, continuing to enhance cooperation on return, readmission, and reintegration through the complete and efficient implementation of the Pakistan-EU readmission agreement will also be included.

This will cover all pertinent aspects of migration management.

Day 2 of the visit

On Day 2, at a joint press conference, to make it easier for suitably qualified Pakistani people to work & reside in interested EU States, Commissioner Johansson met Hina Rabbani Khar.

Hina Rabbani Khar, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Pakistan, decided to step up preparations for establishing a Talent Partnership with Pakistan.

Ministry of Pakistan Foreign Affairs tweeted, “Hina Rabbani met EU Commissioner for Migration & Home Affairs. Discussion focused on Pak-EU relations in general & migration in particular. They announced launching of Dialogue on Migration & Mobility, which would open avenues of legal migration from Pakistan to the European Union.”

Commissioner Johansson, on her part, expressed her gratitude to the Pakistani government for being so kind as to welcome 3 million Afghans, of which 1.3 million are refugees.

She also touched upon the recent show of continental cooperation by the EU in hosting 4.5 million Ukrainian refugees this year.

The Commissioner discussed potential legal and secure migration routes to Europe with Federal Ministers and Secretaries of the Interior, Overseas and Human Resource Development, and Education and Professional Training.
