Brussels, 5 October 2021 (GNP/ TDI): European Union Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen congratulates Fumio Kishida on his appointment as Japan’s Prime Minister. According to President Von der Leyen, the EU and Japan will deepen their strategic relationship.

From combating climate change to fighting COVID, we are all facing the same major problems. In an increasingly competitive world, their collaboration is all the more valuable.

On Monday the parliament chooses Fumio Kishida as the newly elected Prime Minister of Japan. Kishida, a former foreign minister, has long expressed an ambition to become Prime Minister. He is seen as a soft-spoken, dovish consensus builder, although he is not widely popular.

As foreign minister, he supervised the ratification of an agreement with South Korea on individuals forced to work in Japan’s wartime brothels, and he arranged for former US President Barack Obama to visit the Hiroshima nuclear bomb memorial city.
