Elon Musk lands in China for Tesla talks

Musk is expected to visit Tesla’s Shanghai plant.

Beijing, 30 May, 2023 (GNP): Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla Inc. (TSLA.O), landed in Beijing on a private jet on Tuesday, according to the news sources

In his first trip to China in three years, reports claim that Musk will meet with top Chinese authorities and visit Tesla’s plant in Shanghai.

Tesla did not immediately reply to the requests about whether Musk has landed in China or not.

It was unknown who Musk would meet within the Chinese government or what matters they would discuss. Also, there has been no mention of Musk’s visit in the state media as of Tuesday afternoon.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao said on Tuesday that China has always welcomed Musk – and other business leaders – looking to promote “mutually beneficial cooperation.”

Musk’s Tesla Motors owns a factory in Shanghai, the Gigafactory Shanghai, which is Tesla’s largest factory for the production of electric vehicles.

The visit takes place at a time when Tesla is dealing with escalating competition from electric vehicles built in China and some ambiguity around expansion plans for the Shanghai production complex Musk visited in early 2020.

After the United States, China is Tesla’s second-biggest market, and its largest production base is the Shanghai plant.

Moreover, the company also announced in April that it would construct a sizable battery facility in Shanghai called Megapack, with a projected annual manufacturing capacity of 10,000 batteries.

According to ADS-B Exchange, a travel aggregation website, Musk’s private jet, a 2015 Gulfstream G650ER, was seen taking off from Alaska on Tuesday morning before flying across Japan and South Korea.

As his plane was on the way to China, Musk tweeted about developments in China’s space program, which intends to land a crew on the moon before 2030.

“The Chinese space program is far more advanced than most people realize,” he said.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine, Chinese researchers have been monitoring Musk’s SpaceX and the military applications of its Starlink satellite network with attentiveness and apprehension.
