Election commission of Pakistan sets general elections date for February 8

Islamabad, 3 November, 2023 (GNP): In compliance with the Supreme Court of Pakistan’s orders, the Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan, Sikandar Sultan Raja, alongside Attorney General for Pakistan, Mansoor Usman Awan, and four members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), met with President Dr. Arif Alvi at Aiwan-e-Sadr.

The purpose of the meeting was to determine the date for the forthcoming General Elections in Pakistan.

During this constructive meeting, President Dr. Arif Alvi was briefed on the progress made by the ECP regarding constituency delimitation and election preparations.

After extensive discussions, the participants reached a unanimous decision to schedule the General Elections on February 8, 2024.

Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja initially proposed February 11 as the election date in a formal letter to President Arif Alvi.

However, it is important to clarify that the President held this meeting with not only CEC Raja but also with all four members of the commission and Attorney General for Pakistan, Mansoor Usman Awan, as per the directives of the Supreme Court.

The meeting covered various aspects related to the upcoming general elections, with a specific focus on the progress achieved by the ECP in terms of delimiting constituencies. Following thorough deliberation, the decision was made to conduct the general elections on February 8, 2024.

This decision has been officially reaffirmed by the Election Commission of Pakistan.
