Donald Trump charged for Capitol rioting

The former President is charged with four crimes: Insurrection, creating hindrance in the official proceedings of Congress, a conspiracy of defrauding the US, and making false statements to the federal government.

Washington, 20 December 2022 (GNP): The committee investigating the attack on the US Capitol building last year by republicans allegedly instigated by former President Donald Trump finally recommended his booking for this charge.

The nine-membered committees comprising 7 Democrats and 2 Republicans, through their voting on the final report of the committee, charged the former President with four crimes that are; Insurrection, creating hindrance in the official proceedings of Congress, a conspiracy of defrauding the US, and making false statements to the federal government.

After 17 months of back and forth, the committee referred Donald Trump’s case to the Department of Justice (DOJ) on the above-mentioned charges. This case referral is symbolic as far as DOJ is concerned because Attorney General Merrick Garland has already initiated two separate investigations against Trump on 6 January charges.

The committee members unanimously agreed on this that Trump knew very well that the Presidential Elections of 2020 were not rigged but tried deliberately to malign the victory of the then President incumbent Joe Biden and the electoral system of the country.

The committee relied heavily on videos both of his electioneering and his Republican rioters storming the Capitol building recorded by individuals, media, and security officers’ body cams who were then on duty.

Though the Republicans called the 6 January committee to be one-sided, favoring only the Democrats, in essence, it was bipartisan having two Republican Senators, Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger.

The two Republicans were strong critics of Trump’s policies, but in nature, they are die-hard Republicans. Thus, giving a bipartisan look to the committee.

While criticizing the final report of the committee, Donald Trump posted on his social media account that this would make him further stronger, and it is an attempt to stop him from contesting the 2024 Presidential Elections.

John Eastman, the lawyer and adviser to Trump, is also charged with writing the vicious memos and pressurizing the then vice president Mike Pence.
