Astana, 21 May 2024, (GNP):Erzhan Kazykhan, Assistant to the President of Kazakhstan for International Affairs, and Uzra Zeya, U.S. Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights, jointly led the third annual High-Level Dialogue on Human Rights and Democratic Reforms between Kazakhstan and the United States (US) on May 20, 2024, in Astana, the Republic of Kazakhstan held.
Throughout the dialogue, both the United States and the Republic of Kazakhstan emphasized their dedication to promoting human rights. They engaged in discussions covering various significant topics, such as the rule of law, safeguarding freedom of expression for media personnel, and ensuring freedom of religion or belief.
Additionally, they addressed the protection of vulnerable and marginalized groups, disability rights, and explored avenues for multilateral cooperation, including collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the C5+1 Platform.
Upholding human rights, including the freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly, alongside fostering an environment conducive to independent media, are essential pillars for the sustenance of a robust and flourishing democracy.
The United States reiterated its unwavering support for the comprehensive implementation of President Tokayev’s reform agenda, underscoring the significance of progress in advancing human rights, notably exemplified by the passage of the April 2024 law re-criminalizing domestic violence—a pivotal step in ensuring the protection of survivors.

Simultaneously, the U.S. delegation urged Kazakhstan to continue its reform efforts, emphasizing the importance of active engagement and consultation with civil society partners to guarantee transparency and accountability.
