COAS Asim Munir and Afghan Acting Foreign Minister discuss regional security and cooperation

Pakistan and Afghanistan discussed Security measures and mutual Interests

Rawalpindi, 8 May 2023 (GNP): The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir and the Acting Foreign Minister of Afghanistan Amir Khan Muttaqi held a meeting to discuss topics of shared interest, including regional security, border management, and the establishment of formal security mechanisms to improve the current security situation. 

The COAS emphasized the necessity for increased cooperation between the two neighboring countries to effectively address the common threats of terrorism and extremism.

He also reiterated the requirement for complete support and commitment from the Afghan Interim Government concerning matters of mutual interest.

The Acting Foreign Minister of Afghanistan, Muttaqi, expressed gratitude for Pakistan’s ongoing support for the people of Afghanistan and recognized Pakistan’s crucial role in facilitating peace and development in Afghanistan.

He also conveyed his willingness to collaborate closely with Pakistan to advance regional stability and prosperity.

The two parties acknowledged the significance of keeping in touch regularly to enhance bilateral relations and tackle issues of shared concern.

The COAS reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to ensuring a secure, peaceful, and prosperous Afghanistan.

This meeting comes after the 5th China-Pakistan-Afghanistan Trilateral Foreign Ministers Dialogue. Foreign Minister  Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and the Acting Foreign Minister of Afghanistan discussed aspects of Pakistan and Afghanistan’s bilateral relations, including political, economic, trade, connectivity, peace and security, counterterrorism, trade, and education.

Bhutto emphasized the importance of a peaceful and stable Afghanistan during the Council of Foreign Ministers meeting at the Shanghai Cooperation in India. He stated that Afghanistan’s stability is not necessary for regional but also world peace.
