China conducts land-based mid-course missile interception test

After USA, China is the only country who possesses the mid-course missile technology.

Beijing, 16 April 2023 (GNP): China successfully conducted a ground-based mid-course missile interception test on Friday.

According to the Chinese Defense Ministry, a defensive operation within Chinese territory was conducted late on Friday evening, which successfully met its intended testing objective.

It also stated that the test was conducted for defensive purposes and was not aimed at any particular country. The Ministry, however, did not disclose additional information, such as whether the test intercepted an object, the number of interceptor missiles launched, and their landing locations.

Ballistic missile defense systems (BMDS) comprise ground-based interceptor missiles, extensive radar networks, and fire control systems designed to intercept and destroy incoming ballistic missiles, including intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) that may carry nuclear or other warheads. BMDS operates during the midcourse phase of the missile’s flight trajectory, while it’s flying in space en route to its intended target.

Following the United States, China has become the second country to acquire this technology. However, unlike the US, all of China’s interceptor missiles were launched from ground test sites, while the US can also carry out midcourse missile defense from sea-based systems.

China reported its initial successful attempt at a ground-based midcourse interception in 2010, followed by at least five additional similar tests in 2013, 2014, 2018, and 2021, with the most recent test in June of 2022.
