Canada appoints first adviser on Anti-Islamophobia

Amira Elghawaby, a journalist and human rights activist, is appointed by the Canadian government as its first advisor on anti-islamophobia.

Ottawa, 27 January 2023 (GNP): The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, appointed the first special representative of his government to combat anti-Islamophobia.

Amira Elghawaby, a journalist by profession and founding member of the Canadian Anti-Hate Network, has been appointed by the government as its advisor on anti-Islamophobia.  She was also a leading figure in the creation of the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM).

Her parents migrated from Egypt when she was only two months. Amira Elghawaby also spent four years in Bandung, Indonesia.

As an advisor, she would assist the Canadian government in its fight against Islamophobia, systematic racism, racial discrimination, and religious intolerance.

She would advise and suggest such policies and legislations that would help the Canadian government to combat the rising threat of Islamophobia.

The Canadian Muslim community especially applauded the appointment of Amira Elghawaby as a positive and heartening gesture for them in the rising threat and discrimination against Muslims and Islam.

Her appointment came at a time when the sixth anniversary of the Quebec City mosque shooting is going to be observed on 29 January.

Six Muslim worshipers were gunned down, while the other 19 were injured in a mosque in Quebec City.

Since 2017 more than 11 Muslims have lost their lives due to Islamophobia, confirmed by Stephen Brown, chief executive of NCCM.

It is estimated that out of the 38 million total population of Canada, the Canadian Muslim population is 1.8 million.

The appointment of this special representative was long demanded by the Canadian Muslim communities after the truck attack of June 2021 that killed four members of a Muslim family in London, Ontario.
