Avalanche kills 9 in Gilgit-Baltistan

Astore, 27 May 2023 (GNP): A devastating avalanche occurred on Saturday in the Shunter Top area of Astore district, Gilgit-Baltistan resulting in the loss of 9 lives and leaving 25 others injured.

The incident primarily affected nomads who were caught in the natural disaster. In response to the calamity, a dedicated control room has been established in the district to coordinate rescue operations and efficiently recover individuals trapped under the debris.

The authorities are working tirelessly to provide all necessary assistance to the affected people, and rescue teams are tirelessly combing the area to locate and aid survivors.

Chief Minister Gilgit-Baltistan, Khalid Khurshid, expressed deep grief and sorrow over the loss of precious lives and has issued directives to ensure that all possible help is extended to those affected by the tragedy.

In January, at least four people were killed, including a man and his son in an avalanche in Asheri Darra area of the mountainous Upper Dir district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, local residents said.

The incident occurred while they were engaged in chopping timber from a fallen tree. According to local residents, the victims were buried under the snow, and the extreme cold conditions proved fatal.

Early in the morning, the locals received news that four individuals who had ventured to the mountain the previous evening were reported missing.

Subsequently, a search and rescue operation was initiated, involving the dedicated efforts of Rescue 1122 and the local police force, Residents added.
