Birmingham, 4 August 2022 (GNP): Pakistani Judo martial artist Shah Hussain Shah bagged a bronze medal for Pakistan in the Commonwealth Games 2022. He won the medal by beating South African Judoka Thomas-Laszlo in the 90kg category.
He had previously lost to Australia’s Harrison Cassar in the quarterfinal, and after making it through to the repechage round, where he received a bye and set up the match with Breytenbach.
Shah Hussain has a history of winning various medals in Judo. Previously, Shah Hussain Shah won a Silver Medal in Commonwealth Games 2014 at Glasgow. He also won Gold Medals in the 2016 and 2019 South Asian Games. Moreover, he bagged a bronze medal at the 2018 Asian Games as well.
His father, Hussain Shah, is a former boxer for Pakistan in the Olympics, and won the nation’s first Olympic boxing medal—a bronze—at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, Korea.
Commonwealth Games 2022
A total of 73 Pakistani athletes are participating in the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in all sports categories. Pakistani weightlifter Nooh Dastgir Butt won a gold medal in weightlifting in the 109+ category. He lifted 405 kg in total, which is a record for CWG 2022.
The multi-sport event began on 28 July 2022. It is organized by the Commonwealth of Nations, an international organization mostly consisting of former British colonies that are now independent countries.
There are 20 sports in the ongoing edition, including athletics, badminton, boxing, and hockey, among others. 5,054 Athletes from 72 countries belonging to the Commonwealth Games Association are participating.
Currently, Australia is leading the points table with twenty-two gold, thirteen silver, and seventeen bronze medals. It is followed by England with eleven gold, sixteen silver, and seven bronze. The third position is held by Canada with sixteen gold, twenty silver, and twenty-one bronze medals.
