Federal Minister attends Swiss National Day Celebrations

Islamabad, 2 August 2022 (GNP): The Federal Minister of Energy, Khurram Dastgir Khan, attended the celebration of Swiss National Day in Islamabad as the Chief Guest. On the occasion, he appreciated the relationship between the two countries and expressed high hopes for further strengthening these ties.

The Embassy of Switzerland in Islamabad organized a ceremony to celebrate Swiss National Day. Dignitaries, government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, media, and other professionals attended the event.

During the event, topics including Swiss neutrality, its membership of the UN Security Council, and Ukraine’s recovery were discussed. Moreover, a cake-cutting ceremony was held.

The Swiss Charge d’Affaires Alberto Groff emphasized the importance of Pakistan-Switzerland bilateral relations. He said, “Our bilateral relations are excellent, but we know we can do more…” He further expressed his hope that it will be the start of even better ties between the two countries.

The first of August is recognized as a national holiday in the Swiss Federation. The day commemorates the establishment of the Swiss Confederation in 1291.

 

Pakistan-Switzerland Ties

Close bilateral ties and mutual cooperation exist between Pakistan and Switzerland. In 1949, they established diplomatic ties. Switzerland serves as an important developmental partner for Pakistan.

Both sides have signed several bilateral agreements in various fields, including debt relief, aviation, disaster management, and investment. They signed a contract for technological collaboration in 1966.

Switzerland and Pakistan continue to have successful commercial ties. In 2017, trade between the two nations exceeded US$ 500 million. While in 2019 there were about 373.7 CHF worth of exports from Switzerland to Pakistan.

Moreover, the two countries also enjoy good people-to-people ties through cooperation in education and culture.
