India Remands Two CJP Leaders After Jantar Mantar Protest

New Delhi (GNP): Two senior leaders of India’s youth-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) have been remanded in judicial custody for five days over trespassing at Jantar Mantar, the party said on Wednesday.

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke announced on social media that Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das were detained on Tuesday for entering the site in the heart of the Indian capital. Their remand follows a Delhi Police announcement a day earlier that Jantar Mantar was no longer on the list of officially designated protest sites.

A video shared online by Dipke shows the two men climbing over barricades and entering an open area. They are seen waving the Indian national flag before police chase and detain them.

The venue has been sealed off for several days with yellow metal barricades and placed under a heavy police presence. This has further restricted access to a site long associated with public demonstrations.

The arrests come as demonstrations grow among supporters of the online movement and opposition parties. The protesters are demanding the resignation of the head of the Election Commission of India over allegations of manipulation of voter rolls to benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling party.

Defending the detained leaders, Dipke said they were being punished for unfurling the tricolour at Jantar Mantar. In a post addressed directly to the prime minister, he challenged him to show some courage.

The case has renewed attention on the restrictions facing protesters in the Indian capital. Political opponents and activists are seeking to challenge the government and demand accountability from public institutions, and the closure of a long-standing protest venue has become part of that debate.

Dipke said, “They are being punished for unfurling the tricolour at Jantar Mantar.”
