Russia Marks National Flag Day with Tribute to Historic Tricolour

Moscow (GNP): Russia celebrates National Flag Day, an occasion officially instituted by presidential decree in 1994 to honor one of the nation’s primary sovereign symbols alongside its coat of arms and anthem.

The white, blue, and red tricolour stands as an emblem of state sovereignty, historical continuity, and national identity, while also serving as a banner raised by military personnel during the ongoing special military operation.

The origins of the tricolour date back over 300 years to 1693, when Peter the Great first raised it as his personal banner in Arkhangelsk, later mandating its use on merchant vessels in 1705.

Over time, its function expanded from maritime identification to marking territorial additions, notably during an 1806 Sakhalin expedition where both the St. Andrew’s banner and the tricolour were displayed. It officially achieved status as the national flag in 1896 ahead of the coronation of Nicholas II.

Following periods where alternative banners represented the state—including the black, yellow, and white imperial flag in the 19th century and the red Soviet flag for most of the 20th century—the tricolour was restored on August 22, 1991.

Its modern status and exact horizontal tri-band design were formally codified into law through the Federal Constitutional Law on December 25, 2000.
