CDA launches initiative rewarding students who plant and care trees, Randhawa

UN-Habitat Marks World Environment Day with Plogging and Eco Action Drive at Trail 5.

Islamabad, – In celebration of World Environment Day 2025, UN-Habitat Pakistan, in collaboration with the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Shehersaaz, organized a Plogging and Eco Action Drive at Trail 5, Margalla Hills, Islamabad. The event supported this year’s global theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution”, focusing on reducing plastic waste and fostering sustainable urban living.

The event brought together a dynamic group of participants, including representatives from United Nations, Government Representatives as well as youth volunteers, civil society members, and the general public. The Chief Guest, Mr. Muhammad Ali Randhawa, Chairman of CDA and Chief Commissioner, actively participated, reflecting the strong commitment of local leadership to environmental sustainability.

Ms. Almas Shakoor, Executive Director of Shehersaaz, welcomed attendees and underscored the importance of reviving the natural environment through collective action. She stressed that the protection of nature begins with small, consistent community-driven efforts and greater environmental awareness.

Mr. Jawed Ali Khan, Senior Advisor and Habitat Programme Manager at UN-Habitat, introduced the concept of Zero Waste Cities and highlighted UN-Habitat’s work in Pakistan in waste management, urban planning, and sustainable development. “Plastic pollution is not just a waste problem—it affects health, biodiversity, and urban resilience. Our focus is on building systems and partnerships that reduce waste and create more inclusive and sustainable cities,” he said. Mr. Asif Ali Sahibzada, DG, Ministry of Climate Change talked about the initiatives being taken by Government of Pakistan to beat plastic pollution.

Mr. Randhawa, in his address, commended UN-Habitat and Shehersaaz for their meaningful contributions to improving the urban environment. He also highlighted CDA’s new initiative to incentivize students who plant a tree and take care of it for one year, rewarding them with academic marks, a creative approach to promote youth engagement in climate action and urban greenery.
Following the formal remarks, participants took part in a plogging activity, collecting litter along Trail 5. The activity not only helped clean the scenic trail but also served as a model for promoting fitness and environmental responsibility together. To further support environmental restoration, a tree plantation followed the plogging drive. Saplings of native species were planted by the Chief Guest, partners, and volunteers to enhance urban biodiversity and contribute to long-term reforestation goals.
The event concluded with a shared message of responsibility, action, and collaboration. UN-Habitat reaffirmed its continued commitment to supporting Pakistan’s cities in their journey toward being more sustainable, inclusive, and climate-resilient.
