ISLAMABAD :- A high level seminar focusing on multilateralism, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), global governance, and contemporary geopolitical developments was held at the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), bringing together senior diplomats, policymakers, scholars, and students.
Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Pakistan, Jiang Zaidong, delivered a comprehensive and forward looking address on “SCO and the Global Governance Initiative” emphasizing multilateralism, cooperation among developing nations, and the need for reforming global governance mechanisms.
Welcoming diplomats, scholars, and participants, Ambassador Jiang expressed appreciation to Rector NUST Dr Muhammad Zahid Latif and the organizing team for hosting the seminar, noting his continued engagement with the university as a symbol of strong academic and people to people ties between China and Pakistan. He extended warm greetings ahead of the Chinese Spring Festival, wishing prosperity and success to all attendees.

Reflecting on the evolving international environment, the ambassador stated that the world is witnessing profound transformation and growing turbulence, with rising protectionism, unilateralism, and geopolitical confrontation posing serious challenges to global stability. He stressed that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization has, over the past two decades, emerged as a successful model of regional cooperation guided by the “Shanghai Spirit,” which is based on mutual trust, equality, respect for diversity, consultation, and shared development.
Ambassador Jiang underscored that the SCO provides a strong alternative to confrontation and zero sum politics by promoting dialogue, sovereign equality, and mutually beneficial cooperation, calling it an effective force in resisting hegemony and strengthening democracy in international relations.
Ambassador Jiang highlighted President Xi Jinping’s Global Governance Initiative as a practical and principled framework aimed at building a fairer, more inclusive, and effective international order. The initiative, he said, promotes sovereign equality, rule of law, multilateralism, people centered development, and action oriented cooperation, while reinforcing the central role of the United Nations.
He further noted that the Global Governance Initiative works in harmony with China’s Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, and Global Civilization Initiative, collectively offering solutions for development, peace, mutual respect, and international justice in an increasingly uncertain world.
Ambassador Jiang stated that the SCO, representing nearly half of the world’s population and largely composed of emerging and developing economies, is uniquely positioned to champion the interests of developing countries. He highlighted China and Pakistan as key pillars of the SCO and Global South cooperation, describing both nations as strong advocates of multilateralism and regional stability.
Outlining future priorities, the ambassador stressed the need to deepen China Pakistan strategic trust, particularly as both countries mark 75 years of diplomatic relations. He reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening political coordination, expanding development cooperation, and implementing people focused projects that directly benefit communities.
On the global stage, Ambassador Jiang reiterated China’s commitment, alongside Pakistan, to defending the UN centered international system, opposing militarism and coercion, supporting free trade, and actively shaping global rules on climate change and emerging technologies to protect the interests of developing nations.
Concluding his remarks, Ambassador Jiang urged the international community to uphold the Shanghai Spirit and translate the Global Governance Initiative into concrete actions for building a community with a shared future for humanity. He expressed confidence that China Pakistan friendship would continue to grow stronger and contribute positively to regional and global peace and prosperity.
