Russia hints at readiness for talks on the Ukraine crisis: Envoy

Islamabad (GNP ): Russian Ambassador Albert P. Khorev in a Press briefing characterized the ongoing war in Ukraine as part of a broader geopolitical confrontation between Russia and the “collective West,” while reiterating Moscow’s willingness to pursue a negotiated settlement.

Speaking at a regular diplomatic briefing, Khorev argued that the conflict is no longer merely a bilateral dispute with Ukraine but a defining moment in the transition toward a “multipolar world order.” He claimed that Western powers are resisting the decline of their global dominance and are using Ukraine as a proxy in the confrontation.

Khorev stated that conditions on the battlefield currently favor Russian forces, alleging that Ukrainian troops are losing ground and increasingly targeting civilian infrastructure.

He cited a March 10 missile strike in the Russian city of Bryansk, which he said resulted in civilian casualties, as well as a broader rise in cross-border attacks throughout 2025.

He noted that three rounds of peace talks have already taken place this year in Abu Dhabi and Geneva, with some humanitarian progress achieved, including a recent prisoner exchange involving 500 detainees on each side.
However, he stressed that any ceasefire must address what Russia considers the “root causes” of the conflict, including NATO expansion and the treatment of Russian-speaking populations in Ukraine.

Khorev also referenced the 2025 Anchorage meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and former U.S. President Donald Trump as a rare moment of constructive engagement between the two nuclear powers.

He expressed concern over the lack of follow-up on arms control initiatives, particularly after the expiration of the New START treaty earlier this year.

The ambassador sharply criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European governments, accusing them of undermining peace efforts and escalating tensions. He also condemned recent actions targeting Russian economic interests, including restrictions on oil transport and alleged interference with maritime shipping.

Khorev further addressed humanitarian issues, disputing widely cited figures regarding Ukrainian children allegedly transferred to Russia and highlighting ongoing reunification efforts facilitated by international mediators.

Concluding his remarks, Khorev called for broader international cooperation to establish a new Eurasian security framework, expressing hope that countries like Pakistan would play a constructive role in shaping a future regional order.
