Geneva :- At the 61st Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council held in Geneva, Secretary Ministry of Human Rights, Abdul Khalique Shaikh, represented Pakistan and reaffirmed the country’s steadfast commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights worldwide.
In his statement, the Secretary emphasized that human rights are not a luxury reserved for favorable times, but must be cherished and protected amid uncertainty, conflicts, and complex global challenges. As an elected member of the Human Rights Council Pakistan reiterated its constructive engagement with the UN human rights framework.
Highlighting the aggravated global and regional human rights situation, the Secretary expressed grave concern over violations and suppression of fundamental freedoms in Afghanistan, Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, and Palestine.
He stressed that Islam must not be misused to justify the suppression of women’s rights, drawing attention to the situation of women and girls in Afghanistan.
Reaffirming the principle that self-determination is not for sale, the Secretary underscored that the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir continue to be denied their inalienable rights as enshrined in the UN Charter and relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
Drawing attention to the grave humanitarian situation in Palestine, he warned that continued violence and impunity are further destabilizing the region and undermining prospects for lasting peace.
The Secretary also expressed deep concern over rising religious intolerance in political discourse, particularly the growing trend of Islamophobia as a tool for prejudice against Muslims. He urged the international community to step up collective efforts to combat hatred, discrimination, and deep-seated inequalities within and among States.
Pakistan remains committed to advancing dialogue, multilateral cooperation, and universal respect for human rights in accordance with the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter.
