Avalanche Risk Following Snowfall in hilly areas, NDMA

Islamabad, : National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), based on the latest Synoptic Weather Outlook issued by National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC), has issued an impact-based weather advisory highlighting a heightened risk of avalanches in hilly and high-altitude areas of the country during the period 23 to 29 January 2026, particularly in the aftermath of ongoing and expected snowfall.
According to NEOC, a moderate westerly weather system is affecting the upper and northern parts of Pakistan, with its peak impact expected in next 24 to 48 hours, bringing rain and moderate to heavy snowfall over higher elevations of Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir, along with snowfall over hilly and northern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. NDMA cautions that fresh snow accumulation, followed by very cold temperatures, will significantly increase avalanche susceptibility in steep and snow-covered slopes, posing a serious threat to local communities, travelers, tourists, and infrastructure in vulnerable mountainous areas.
NDMA has specifically warned that the post-snowfall period, when snow layers begin to stabilize unevenly, is particularly critical for avalanche occurrences in GB, AJ&K, northern KP, and northern Balochistan. Residents of high-altitude settlements, herders, and those living near mountain slopes are advised to avoid movement along avalanche-prone corridors, while tourists and transporters should refrain from unnecessary travel on snow-covered routes during this period.
In addition to avalanche risks, snowfall may also lead to road closures across high mountain passes and link roads in GB, AJ&K, northern KP, and parts of northern Balochistan, while very cold and dry conditions are expected to prevail after 24 January. In the plains of Punjab and upper Sindh, moderate to dense fog during night and early morning hours may disrupt road traffic and aviation operations, requiring increased caution from commuters.
The prevailing cold wave and frost conditions may also adversely impact frost-sensitive crops, including orchards, vegetables, and early-stage wheat, particularly in northern regions and parts of Punjab. Farmers are advised to adopt appropriate protective measures to reduce potential agricultural losses.
NDMA has advised Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs), district administrations, and relevant line departments to activate contingency plans for avalanche and snow-related emergencies, ensure availability of snow-clearing machinery, and maintain close coordination with local authorities in high-risk districts. The public is strongly urged to stay informed through official NDMA and PDMA advisories, avoid high-altitude travel during adverse weather conditions, and immediately report any emergency situations to local administration or emergency helplines.
NDMA, through NEOC, is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with provincial and district authorities to ensure preparedness and prompt response to any emergency situation. The public is encouraged to stay informed through official channels and by downloading Pak NDMA Disaster Alert mobile application for real-time updates.
