Islamabad : Senator Sherry Rehman, Vice-President of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), observed the 18th death anniversary of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto by paying a moving tribute to the iconic leader whose vision and leadership profoundly transformed Pakistan’s political and social landscape.
“While commemorating the 18th death anniversary of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, I pay homage to an exceptional leader—an enduring symbol of bravery and resilience, and the first democratically elected female prime minister of the Muslim world. Elected twice as Pakistan’s prime minister, she remained steadfast in her struggle for democracy and worked relentlessly to uplift the socio-economic conditions of the people,” Senator Rehman said.
Recalling the far-reaching impact of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto’s assassination, Senator Rehman stated, “Her martyrdom was not only a grievous loss for the Pakistan People’s Party, but an irreparable tragedy for the entire nation. The emptiness created by her absence continues to resonate across Pakistan.”
She described December 27 as one of the most somber dates in the country’s history, calling it “a painful chapter etched into our national conscience.”
Senator Rehman also acknowledged the leadership of President Asif Ali Zardari during the critical period that followed, highlighting his unifying call of Pakistan Khappay. “That powerful message helped hold the nation together at a time of immense turmoil and uncertainty,” she remarked.
Emphasizing Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto’s role as a symbol of national unity, Senator Rehman said, “She was the glue that bound the federation together, often referred to as the ‘chain linking all provinces.’ Her leadership and vision were deeply rooted in the spirit and principles of Pakistan’s Constitution.”
She further noted that under the leadership of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the party continues to pursue Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto’s mission of building a progressive, inclusive, and equitable Pakistan. “Chairman Bilawal reflects her values by championing the rights of the marginalized, the minorities, standing firmly against extremism and injustice, and offering a forward-looking, reform-oriented vision for Pakistan’s future,” Senator Rehman said.
Highlighting Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto’s lasting socio-economic contributions, Senator Rehman praised initiatives that transformed lives across the country. “The Lady Health Worker Programme remains one of her most impactful achievements,” she noted. “Recognized by the World Bank as a ‘gold standard,’ it has delivered essential healthcare services to millions in remote and underserved communities. By enabling women to serve as frontline health workers, she not only strengthened public health systems but also opened doors for women’s economic empowerment nationwide.”
Senator Rehman also underscored the enduring importance of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), which continues to support millions of disadvantaged families. “BISP is a pillar of her legacy and a powerful instrument of economic justice. Through initiatives such as Benazir Kafalat, Benazir Nashonuma, and Benazir Taleemi Wazaif, the programme has provided financial relief, improved maternal and child health, and promoted education for vulnerable families. With the addition of skills development initiatives aimed at enhancing global employability, BISP continues to advance financial inclusion and social empowerment for Pakistan’s marginalized communities,” she said.
Concluding her tribute, Senator Rehman urged the nation to honor Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto’s memory by embracing unity, perseverance, and a renewed dedication to her vision of a progressive, inclusive, and empowered Pakistan.
