AIOU Hosts International Seminar on Modern Interpretative Trends in Tafseer al-Mizan

Islamabad: An international faculty seminar was held yesterday at Allama Iqbal Open University on the topic “Foundations of Modern Interpretative Trends in al-Mizan fi Tafseer al-Qur’an.” The speakers emphasized that in the context of contemporary intellectual challenges, renewed research on interpretative methodologies is indispensable.
The seminar was organized by the Department of Qur’an and Tafseer, Faculty of Arabic and Islamic Studies at Allama Iqbal Open University in collaboration with Jami’at al-Mustafa al-‘Aaliyah (Pakistan Chapter). The session was presided over by the Dean of the Faculty of Arabic and Islamic Studies, Prof. Dr. Shag Mohyuddin Hashmi while the program formally began with welcoming remarks by Dr. Muhammad Kazim Saleem (Head of the Research Department, al-Mustafa International University, Pakistan Chapter).
In his address, Prof. Dr. Mohyuddin Hashmi said that Tafseer al-Mizan not only provides comprehensive and balanced guidance in the context of modern intellectual and academic debates but its scholarly depth also opens new avenues for research. He added that in the present age to understand emerging trends in Qur’anic interpretation, it is essential to study such exegetical works that establish a strong connection between tradition and modernity.
The keynote lecture was delivered by Dr. Sana Ullah Hussain (Chairman, Department of Qur’an and Tafseer, Faculty of Arabic and Islamic Studies). He presented a detailed discussion on modern interpretative trends and their intellectual foundations in the light of al-Mizan. He stated that al-Mizan is a comprehensive and holistic exegesis that provides highly beneficial guidance for addressing contemporary economic, social, and intellectual challenges. According to him, this tafseer establishes a strong link between tradition and contemporary demands, making its study indispensable for today’s researchers and students. He also emphasized the need for high-quality translations of this tafseer into various languages, especially Urdu, so that its scholarly and intellectual discourse can reach a wider audience and benefit scholars more effectively.
Those who delivered special addresses at the event included Dr. Rab Nawaz (Chairman, Department of Islamic Studies, Hi-Tech, Taxila), Dr. Syed Asif Mahmood Bukhari (Former Chairman, Department of Qur’an and its Sciences, International Islamic University), and Dr. Raees Azam Shahid (Faculty Member, Department of Tafseer, al-Mustafa International University).
