Islamabad : Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, in his message on the occasion of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, reaffirmed the Senate’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding freedom of the press, protecting journalists, and ensuring accountability for crimes committed against media professionals.
The Chairman emphasized that journalists play a vital role in strengthening democracy by promoting transparency, accountability, and public awareness. He noted that their courage and dedication in the pursuit of truth often come at great personal risk, and their safety must remain a collective responsibility of the state and society.
He expressed deep concern over the increasing incidents of harassment, intimidation, and violence faced by journalists globally and stressed that impunity for such crimes undermines justice, weakens democratic institutions, and silences free expression.
“The Senate of Pakistan strongly condemns all forms of violence and pressure tactics against journalists,” the Chairman stated. “There can be no tolerance for impunity in crimes targeting media professionals. A free, responsible, and secure media is essential for the preservation of democracy and the rule of law.”
Reiterating Pakistan’s commitment to international principles of human rights and press freedom, the Chairman urged all relevant institutions, civil society organizations, and the international community to work collectively to create an environment where journalists can perform their duties without fear or reprisal.
