Pakistan reaffirms support for SK Hydropower, energy ties with China, FM

Suki Kinari Hydropower Marks 1 Year of Operations, Powering Pakistan’s Clean Energy Transition

Islamabad : Pakistan marked the first anniversary of Suki Kinari Hydropower Station, with Minister Ahsan Iqbal calling it a CPEC clean energy milestone. In its first year, the project delivered 2.8 billion kWh of power, strengthened energy security, and generated jobs.

Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal has lauded the Suki Kinari Hydropower Station as a landmark achievement of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), underlining its role in Pakistan’s clean energy transition.

Minister Planning addressing the ceremony marking the project’s first anniversary, Iqbal praised its reliable operations and contribution to the national grid. Since its commercial launched, the project has supplied 2.8 billion kilowatt-hours of clean power and created over 100 jobs, easing reliance on traditional fuels while enhancing Pakistan’s energy security.

Iqbal reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to supporting the project and strengthening energy cooperation with China, calling it a symbol of long-term partnership.

Shi Yuanqiang, charge d’affaires at the Chinese embassy, described the SK Hydropower Station as a flagship CPEC initiative, noting its vital role in ensuring a sustainable power supply. He pledged China’s continued cooperation to further upgrade CPEC.

Shah Jahan Mirza, managing director of the Private Power and Infrastructure Board, stressed that the hydropower station has become a key driver of economic growth and civilian electricity supply, reaffirming official support for its continued expansion.
