British Council working to ensure inclusive education & skills for persons with disabilities, Maarya

British Council brings together partners to champion disability inclusion in education and skills

Peshawar, – The British Council, under Component 4 of the EU-funded TVET Sector Support Programme, hosted a consultative workshop titled “Disability Inclusion – Experience Sharing and Learning Workshop. The gathering brought together a diverse group of stakeholders with one shared goal: to create more inclusive opportunities for persons with disabilities (PWDs) across technical and vocational education, higher education, and entrepreneurship.

The workshop provided a platform for open dialogue, learning, and collaboration, with participants exchanging ideas on how to:
• Build inclusive Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit Baltistan, and Balochistan
• Address accessibility gaps in classrooms, infrastructure, and workplace training
• Increase meaningful participation of PWDs in Pakistan’s fast-growing digital and high-tech sectors

Speaking about the initiative, Maarya Rehman, Deputy Director, British Council Pakistan, said:
“Inclusion is not an add-on—it is the foundation of a stronger, fairer society. By bringing voices together, we are building solutions that ensure persons with disabilities have equal access to education and skills. This is how we unlock potential and drive progress for everyone.”

The event drew participation from Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), NGOs, special education institutions, technology partners, incubation hubs, and EU TVET partners including IMSciences, KIU, GVTTI Haripur, GCT D.I Khan, and GPI Skardu. Their insights and experiences shaped key recommendations to guide the development of disability-inclusive Centres of Excellence and to strengthen pathways for Persons With Disabilities to thrive in Pakistan’s digital economy.

This workshop reflects a growing momentum towards ensuring that education and skills systems in Pakistan work for all learners —an essential step towards building an inclusive future.
