Pak-Spain parliamentary cooperation to tackle global challenges

Islamabad — Senator Vicente Azpitarte Pérez, Member of the Spanish Senate, called on Chairman Senate Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani at his residence. The two sides held detailed discussions on strengthening bilateral parliamentary relations, expanding trade and cultural cooperation, and extending mutual support at the global level.

Chairman Senate underscored that Pakistan attaches great importance to its relations with Spain, particularly within the broader framework of the European Union. He expressed gratitude for Spain’s support to Pakistan at various international forums, noting that such cooperation lays a strong foundation for deepening bilateral ties.

Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani lauded Spain’s stance on Palestine, describing it as a historic step toward global peace and justice. Referring to the Kashmir issue, he reiterated Pakistan’s principled position that the long-standing dispute must be resolved in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolutions. He emphasized that India’s recent unilateral actions pose serious threats to regional peace and stability.

The Chairman Senate highlighted that Pakistan has consistently advocated for peace and, despite ongoing tensions with India, has demonstrated responsibility by effectively presenting its case at the international level—an approach that has been widely acknowledged. He further observed that climate change, security, and energy are key areas where Pakistan and Spain can enhance cooperation.

During the meeting, the Chairman Senate also invited the Spanish side to participate in the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference scheduled for November, in Islamabad. He remarked that the platform would serve as an important avenue for sharing experiences, enhancing parliamentary cooperation, and promoting mutual relations.

Both sides agreed to expedite the exchange of parliamentary delegations and revive historical and cultural linkages.

Chairman Senate also noted that the vibrant Pakistani diaspora in Spain is playing a pivotal role in bridging relations and reinforcing bonds of friendship between the two nations.

On his part, Senator Vicente Azpitarte Pérez reaffirmed Spain’s commitment to deepening relations with Pakistan. He emphasized the importance of greater parliamentary cooperation and the development of joint strategies to effectively address emerging global challenges.
