1,700 verified deaths in Turkey and Syria earthquakes

The Interior Minister, advised residents not to enter damaged structures due to the hazards involved

Ankara/Damascus, 6 February 2023 (GNP): Following two significant earthquakes, there are now over 1,700 verified deaths in Turkey and Syria.

According to Reuters, citing Turkey’s emergency AFAD disaster service, the country’s official death toll from the earthquakes has increased to 1,121, increasing the total number of verified deaths in Turkey and Syria to more than 1,700.

More than 326 people have died and 1,042 have been wounded, according to a previous report from Syria’s health ministry.

255 people have died and 811 have been injured in the parts of northwestern Syria that the government does not control, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance (OCHA).

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck southeast Turkey and Syria, collapsing buildings and driving terrified citizens outside on a chilly winter night.

Millions of Syrian refugees lived in a number of large Turkish cities that were in the impacted area.

Suleyman Soylu, the interior minister, advised residents not to enter damaged structures due to the hazards involved and due to atleast six significant aftershocks.

Moreover, a predicted blizzard that would last through Thursday struck the area just as the earthquake struck.
